My Story

Have you ever been prescribed iron tablets? More than likely, yes. Have you ever been tested for Haemochromatosis? More than likely, no.

Haemochromatosis is a genetic and incurable condition which affects the iron levels in your body. Over time, iron is stored in your body and damages your liver, joints, pancreas and heart. Haemochromatosis leaves people with extreme fatigue, irregular periods, mental health issues and a range of other problems. Unfortunately, many people are given prescriptions for iron tablets from the NHS without being tested for this condition.

A few years ago, my mam was diagnosed with Haemochromatosis. This answered many questions for her throughout her life such as why she regularly felt so tired, why she bruised so easily and why she has consistently aching joints. Every few weeks, my mam has to get pints of blood taken to reduce her iron level to a level of safety. As you can imagine, this leaves her extremely tired and uncomfortable.
Following this and due to Haemochromatosis' genetic affects, I had to be tested and my children will need to be too. I have found out that I also carry a gene and may need treatment in the future.

This condition needs to be more acknowledged and therefore I will be running the GNR24 to raise money and awareness for people living with Haemochromatosis. Any donations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you x
